High Power Rifle Frequently Asked Questions

General

I am interesting in shooting a match, where can I get more information?

There are several web sites with very good information about High Power Rifle competitions, reloading and firearms. Visit the following web sites but know that matches at different clubs will vary due to differences in facilities and number of rounds fired. After reading those pages, send an email to our Match Director with any specific questions you might have.

Can I come to a match and just watch?

Certainly. Spectators are always welcome. If possible, come early enough to attend the orientation. If not, stop by the registration desk after the match starts to get a copy of the training handout.

Can I bring a friend?

All DPRC matches are open to the public to either watch or shoot. Garands are available to those who would like to shoot but do not have a proper rifle.

Equipment

What are the main differences between Service and Match Rifles?

Service Rifles are the M1 Garand, M1A and AR-15 in the configuration (except for being semi-auto only) that it was/is issued to members of the US military forces. Internal modifications are allowed, so match barrels and triggers are allowed but external changes such as micrometer adjustable sights, longer barrels, removable carry handles, etc. are not. Match Rifles are either Service Rifles that have external modifications or rifles that are especially built for these competitions. Match Rifles must still have iron sights and have a magazine capable of holding 5 or more rounds so that it can shoot the rapid fire portions of the match.

Can I bring any rifle and still shoot the NRA match?

Yes! In addition to Service Rifle and Match Rifle, there is a category called Sporting Rifle which allows telescopic sights. Any center fire rifle is welcome to shoot at the matches. If the rifle can not be rapidly reloaded it will only shoot 4 rounds during rapid fire instead of 10.
