Vintage Rifle Competition

The Vintage Rifle Competition is several shooting events using different positions and timing formats to test and develop flexibility and marksmanship skills using former military rifles.

Firearm Information:

There are several class of rifle one can use to compete:
    1. Stock Class ("As-Issued")
    2. Enhanced Class (modified, but no scopes)
    3. Rimfire Class

Rifles must be those comforming to the Vintage Military Rifle Rules as defined in the 2004 CMP Rulebook including civilian made equivalents as shown below.

6.2.4 "As-Issued" U. S. Military Rifles

The rifle must be a rifle that was issued by the U.S. Armed Forces and be in "as-issued" condition. Permitted rifles include Caliber .30 U. S. Model 1903 Springfield rifle series, Caliber .30 U. S. Model 1917 rifle, Caliber .30 U. S. M1 Garand rifle, Caliber .30 M1941 Johnson rifle, U. S. Krag rifle and U.S. Carbine Caliber .30 M1, except that Caliber .30 U. S. Model 1903 Springfield rifles manufactured by Springfield Armory with serial numbers of 810,000 or lower or by Rock Island Arsenal with serial numbers of 285,506 or lower may not be used in any CMP sanctioned competition. Commercial rifles of these types and calibers are not permitted in matches for "as-issued" U. S. Military Rifles.

(1) These firearms must be as issued by the U.S. Armed Forces, with standard stock and leather or web sling.

(2) Trigger pulls may not be less than 4.5 pounds, except that the M1903 Springfield and M1941 Johnson must have a trigger pull of not less than 3.5 pounds.

(3) Rifles must conform to the weight and dimensions of the standard issue service rifle.

(4) Only U.S. Government issue parts or non-U. S. Government or commercial parts of the exact same weight and dimensions may be used.

(5) Rifles may be accurized only by the careful assembly of standard parts. "NM" parts may not be used in the rifle.

(6) Rebarreling with a barrel of as-issued dimensions is permitted. Replacement barrels must have the same exact contours and cuts as the as-issued barrel.

(7) The use of shims made of any material is prohibited. The presence of fiberglass, epoxy, glue or any other filler is prohibited. Laminated stocks and stocks made of synthetic materials are prohibited.

(8) All as-issued rifles except Caliber .30 Carbines and U. S. Krag rifles must be chambered for the .30-06 cartridge. No rifles chambered for the 7.62mm NATO (.308) cartridge may be used.


6.2.5 "As-Issued" Foreign Military Rifle

The rifle must be a rifle that was issued by the Armed Forces of a country other than the U. S. and be in "as-issued" condition.

(1) These firearms must be as issued by the foreign government, with a standard stock and leather or web sling.

(2) Trigger pulls may not be less than 3.5 pounds.

(3) Rifles must conform to the weight and dimension specifications of the standard issue service rifle.

(4) Only government issue parts or commercial parts of the exact same weight and dimensions may be used.

(5) Sights must be of the same types that were on rifles issued to regular military personnel. Special purpose sights designed for sniping or target practice are not permitted.

(6) Rifles may be accurized only by the careful assembly of standard parts.

(7) Rebarreling with a barrel of as-issued dimensions is permitted.

(8) Shims made of wood, fabric, paper, metal or other similar material, of types that were originally installed by military arsenals in these rifles and that are placed between the stock and the action, barrel or trigger assembly are permitted. No other modifications or alterations of the as-issued rifle such as the use of glass or epoxy bedding in any location are permitted. The use of synthetic or laminated stocks is not permitted unless such stocks are original government issue.

(9) All as-issued rifles must be chambered for the cartridge for which they were originally chambered.

(10) A leather or web sling that complies with Rule 6.1.1(3) may be attached and used with as-issued foreign military rifles.


Enhanced Military rifle class:

This class shall be as the above class, with the rules 3 through 8 for US rifles stricken. Also, for foreign rifles, rules 3 through 8 are stricken as well. National Match type sights, and sights for competition are allowed, but no telescopic or electronic sights shall be used.


Rimfire class:

This class is open to those firing original military training rifles firing .22 LR ammunition. Telescopic sights are not permitted, and the original sights to the rifle must be used. Firing will be on a 100 yard course of fire, and will be done only with the support of the sling, except when firing offhand, where no support is allowed.


Pistol rules:

Competitors firing in the military pistol match shall use pistols that were issued to a military, and shall provide their own safe ammunition. Pistols shall be fired using standard issue sights, and without ANY accuracy modifications or national match parts.



Schedule of Events:

Practice:Gates open at 12:30. Practice will begin at 12:45.

Registration & Safety Briefing: Registration and safety briefing from 12:30 to 1:15

Match: The match begins at 1:30 p.m.


General Information:

Eligibility: Competition is open to the public.

General Information: Water and soft drinks will be available at the range. Restrooms are available.

Awards: Winners will be awarded prizes as determined by the Match Director.

Required Equipment: Hearing protection; eye protection; rifle, ammunition.

Highly Recommended Equipment: Long sleeve shirt and long pants, hat, sunscreen, shooting mat or carpet (about 3’ x 6’), ammo for practice, food and drink.

Directions: The DPRC Range is located at 3973 Jim Minor Road south of Mebane, North Carolina.
The range is located approximately 20 miles west of Chapel Hill and 10 miles east of Burlington.

  • From I-85 Northbound take Mebane Oaks Road Exit# 154, Turn Right onto Mebane Oaks Road going south.
  • From I-85 Southbound take Mebane Oaks Road Exit# 154, Turn Left onto Mebane Oaks Road going South.
    Proceed 4.6 miles and turn right onto Jim Minor Road.
    Proceed 1.5 miles and range will be on the left with chain link fence and DPRC sign.

Course of Fire:

  • Match is a 50 shot "Garand Match", fired at 200 yards on an SR target. 20 shots prone slow-fire, 10 shots prone rapid-fire, 10 shots sitting rapid-fire, 10 shots standing slow-fire.

Entry Fee: $25.00. No charge for Juniors (under 20). Checks accepted.
