The NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students.
This course is four hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.
A FIRST Steps Course certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the class.
This course is perfect for persons who are new to shooting and trying their pistol for the first time or looking to purchase their first one. Students will complete hands-on training as well as live fire. The course is typically taught with the student’s own pistol, however if do not own a pistol, one will be provided for those who have not yet purchased their own firearm. Course Overview: • Lesson I: Pistol Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling • Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting • Lesson III: Shooting Positions and Shooting Qualification • Lesson IV: Scoring Targets and Selecting and Maintaining Your Pistol Pre-Requisites: None Course Details: • Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete required paperwork). • Location: Durham Pistol and Rifle Club, 3973 S Jim Minor Rd, Haw River, NC 27258 • Age requirement: 18 and older. • Cost: $75.00 What to bring: • Government issued photo ID • Semiautomatic pistol • Owner’s manual for your pistol • 50 rounds of factory packaged ammunition (no reloads) Leave ammunition in your vehicle. No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom. • Eye and ear protection (we’ll provide if you do not own these) • Pen and paper for taking notes • No open toe shoes. No low-cut blouses/shirts. A hat is recommended. What is provided: • NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook • NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure • NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet. Important: No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom at any time. Additional Information: This class is conducted in the clubhouse and on an outdoor range.
